247sports: Major League Football has one team loading up on Gators

MLFB coach Galen Hall is going back to his University of Florida roots in his first season as a head coach for MLFB and demonstrated that by selecting six Gators in the Territorial Draft. Hall’s Sunshine State-based roster is also comprised of former USF and FSU familiar faces. With the free agency period about to begin, it appears coach Hall will be looking to get a head start on building his team’s chemistry — even if there may be a few underlying rivalries throughout the depth chart. Thomas Goldkamp of 247sports gave a round up of Hall’s UF selections.

Six Florida players have been selected so far in the inaugural Major League Football Draft, which just wrapped up Day 2 of a draft that will see each of the league’s eight teams make 40 selections during the course of the draft.

The draft is currently through 20 rounds, with seven former Gators getting a chance to further their playing careers in MLFB.

Day 2 of the draft was a territorial draft, and the idea is clear once you get a look at the draft picks.

Defensive tackle Darious Cummings was the first selection, going in the second round to former Florida coach Galen Hall. Hall then selected fellow defensive tackle Damien Jacobs in the third round.

Tight end Clay Burton joined Hall’s team as a sixth-round pick. Safety Jabari Gorman was Hall’s ninth-round pick, while linebacker Brandon Hicks was selected in the 12th round. Offensive guard Jon Halapio was selected by Orlando in the 13th round.

While MLFB hasn’t gotten a ton of publicity and the concept has been tried before in various forms, the goal is pretty simple. Craft rosters of local players that fans would like to see grouped together that haven’t quite made it in the big leagues to draw interest from diehard college football fans.

The league will play its games in the spring and the summer, with a 10-game regular season and three playoff games. The first season is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2016. The league’s president is former Florida great Wes Chandler.
