Becoming a Pro: Chris Bonner Talks About What It Means To Be A Team’s QB

There’s a saying in football scouting that preaches, “you can’t teach size.” It goes a long way with strength, balance and overall ability. But beyond that, it can make a statement, even before words are spoken. Such was the case for 6-foot-six quarterback Chris Bonner and his now head coach Charlie Collins.

“Funny thing is I knew nothing about Chris Bonner originally. We went up to the Oregon camp and we were intrigued immediately. He had that kind of leadership demeanor about him. He took command of the drills and had good presence about him. You want a guy who is a natural leader for the position.”

After winning a national championship (DII) at Colorado State-Pueblo, Bonner received attention from NFL Draft scouts and was featured in Bleacher Reports “Best QB Draft Prospects You Haven’t Heard About.” Bonner was given a chance with the Carolina Panthers, and even though he wasn’t able to gain a spot with the organization, he got a chance to see what it was like being a professional both on and off the field.

“That’s one of the biggest parts about it, not just playing on the field and representing the team on game day, but as well as in the community, whether its going to schools to talk to kids or just helping out in anyway I can,” Bonner said. “I am really looking forward to it and can’t wait to get started.”

In terms of what fans can expect to see from the second overall pick, coach Collins talked about molding his entire offense around what his quarterback can do. Expect for his team to get back to basics when it comes to the passing game.

“One thing I like about him already, he’s already comfortable under center and that’s what we’re going to be promoting. We’re going to let him get out of the pocket, do a lot of play action pass, and get back to old school football. He’s a true drop back passer.”
