Feb. 02–LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. — For a pair of former local collegiate football players, the opportunity to step back onto the football field competitively was too good to pass up.
Over the weekend, those dreams for both James Caine and Marquiz Edget took a giant step toward becoming true when the duo was selected in the inaugural Major League Football (MLFB) draft over the weekend. Major League Football, inc., is a new, professional spring football league scheduled to kick off in cities across the country in 2016.
MLFB has yet to announce the locations for its franchises, though Little Rock, Arkansas, and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, are mentioned amongst the possibilities per the league’s website.
Caine, a 5-foot-10, 177 pound cornerback, was selected in the fourth round of the “Territorial” stage of the draft and will play under former NFL head coach Dave Campo. At Hazelwood East prep, Caine spent his freshman season at Iowa Western Community College in 2010 before transferring to Missouri State, where he spent the 2011-12 seasons.
Edget, a 5-11, 191 defensive back, was selected in the 53rd round of the “National” stage of the draft and will play under longtime NFL coach Ted Cottrell. As a junior at Missouri Southern Edget, a Grenada, Mississippi native, started the first nine games of the 2013 season and recorded seven tackles (two solo) on the season.
“Our original plan called for 800 to 900 potential draftees, while the actual amount of applicants has exceeded 2,000,” MLFB President Wes Chandler said in a release during the draft.
The eight-team league is backed by former Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards, who is a senior adviser to the league, and will be coached by a host of former NFL coaches.
